Why Visible Mending?
-
The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions
That's more than international flights and maritime shipping combined.
-
Reduce your personal carbon footprint
Extending the life of a garment by just 9 months reduces its carbon footprint by 20-30%.
-
Most people only wear 40% of the clothes in their wardrobe
On average, people only wear 40% of the clothes in their wardrobe, often discarding items due to minor damage that could be repaired.
Through our hands-on workshops, we empower participants to mend their clothing, reinforcing sustainability values while fostering a community-driven approach to reducing textile waste.
The UK alone discards 300,000 tonnes of textiles per year, with £140 million worth of clothing ending up in landfills annually. Help us break the cycle of fast fashion, by reducing demand for new garments and lowering waste.

Let's dive in
What to expect
I start by explaining the concepts of visible mending and how it relates to sustainability and as a useful skill. We go over the materials for the workshop and learn basic stitches like scotch darning (The Art of Darning) or cross-stitching (The Art of Japanese Sashiko).

The most important step
Assess the damage
Participants are encouraged to bring their own garments for repair, whether that's a pair of socks, a moth-eaten sweater or a linen shirt with a ripped collar.
Together, we will assess the damage and determine which method of repair is needed. We will also look closely at the material so that we can ascertain which type of needle, thread, and patching material will provide the best support.

Time to mend
From there, we will begin our repairs!
For the duration of the workshop, participants will work on their mends. I will provide instruction and guidance throughout.
For those who are unable to complete their project, this workshop will equip them with the skills to finish their mends at home.
Sashiko and darning kits can be added to the experience for companies wanting to provide a skill which can be taken home post-workshop.
